Install ONYX1 on your phone

Put ONYX1 on your home screen so it opens full screen like an app, on an iPhone, an iPad, an Android phone or a computer.

The home-screen version uses the same ONYX1 pages and data as your browser. After it loads, it opens on Home without the browser's address bar. The released Android app shows the ONYX1 mark while it loads, then uses the same account and workspace as the browser version. In that app, Choose from library uses the device gallery and prepares the selected photos before upload. The browser version keeps the browser's own file picker.

This guide covers the browser's home-screen install. The released ONYX1 app is for Android only. There is no released iPhone or iPad app. On iPhone and iPad, use ONYX1 in your browser and follow the home-screen steps below.

Before you start

Sign in to ONYX1 in your phone's browser.

Find Install app

  • On a phone, open the menu (the button at the top left, or More in the tab bar). Install app is near the bottom, above Help.
  • On a computer, it's at the bottom of the menu while the menu is expanded.

On an Android phone or a computer

  1. Select Install app.
  2. Confirm in the install prompt your browser shows.

On an iPhone or iPad

  1. Select Install app. ONYX1 shows Add ONYX1 to your home screen.
  2. Tap Share, following the steps ONYX1 shows: it points you to Safari's toolbar or Chrome's address bar.
  3. ONYX1's steps then say: scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen.
  4. ONYX1's last step: tap Add, and the ONYX1 icon lands on your home screen.
  5. Select Got it to close the steps.

In a browser other than Safari or Chrome on an iPhone or iPad, such as Firefox, Edge or Opera, ONYX1 asks you to open onyx1.app in Safari instead, then tap Share and Add to Home Screen there.

If ONYX1 asks you to sign in the first time you open it from your home screen, sign in with your usual email and password.

If the Android app asks you to update WebView

The released Android app needs a supported Android WebView to display ONYX1. If it shows Update Android System WebView to use ONYX1, select Update. After the update finishes, return to ONYX1 and select Try again.

If your device does not have the Play Store app, Update opens the Google Play page in your browser instead. If ONYX1 cannot identify the WebView provider, Update opens a generic Android System WebView search.

If you lose your connection

If you lose your connection while ONYX1 is open, the home-screen version and the released Android app keep the current ONYX1 screen available. Supported job status changes and job or incident photo uploads are saved on the device and sent when the connection returns. Closing and reopening either one does not discard those queues. Wait for the pending work to finish syncing before uninstalling the app or clearing ONYX1 site data.

If a queued site or incident photo, or a daily-report co-signature, is permanently refused, ONYX1 saves the refusal details before removing its bytes from the queue and shows the person whose device queued it a notice once. The notice explains why and can be dismissed. A different person signing in on the same device does not see it. Image and signature fields inside a form-fill report are different: a failed file stays in that form with its own error and retry control rather than appearing in this notice.

If Install app isn't there

  • Inside the installed app, Install app doesn't show. Look for the ONYX1 icon on your home screen.
  • On Android or a computer, Install app appears only when your browser offers to install ONYX1. If it never appears, keep using ONYX1 in your browser: it works there without installing.
