A business card is a page with your name, role and contact details in your company's logo and colours. You share it with a QR code or a link. Whoever opens it can save you as a contact, call, text, email, visit your website or get directions, without installing anything.

Turn cards on for your company

Only the owner and admins can do this. Business cards are available during a workspace's trial and on eligible plans. See Plans and what each includes.

  1. Open Settings → Business cards.
  2. Tick Cards on for the company.
  3. Under Card design, leave Use my colours from Branding ticked to use your logo and brand colour, or untick it and choose Card colour, Text colour and Accent. ONYX1 refuses a colour pair that is hard to read. The sample card at the top of Card design updates as you change the colours and the other fields on this page. Select it, or Show back, to see the back.
  4. Under On every card, add your Website, Office phone, Address (start typing and pick a suggestion, or type your own), Tagline (back of the card) and About the business (back of the card). The tagline, the line about the business and the address show on the back of the card.
  5. Under People may show, tick the personal details people can add: Mobile, Email, Job title and Photo.
  6. Select Save business cards.

Your logo comes from Settings → Branding. If you have not added one, the card shows your company's initials instead. See Add your logo and brand colour.

Make your own card

Everyone on your team has a card of their own, whatever their role.

  1. Open My card. On a phone, open More and then Settings and select My card.
  2. Check your name, then add the details your company allows. Your email starts as your login email; change it if you want to show a different address.
  3. Select Create my card.
  4. Turn on Card is live to make the card page public. Turn it off at any time to take the page down.

If your company has not turned cards on, My card says so and tells you who can.

Share it

  • Show to scan fills the screen with a QR code. Hold the phone up and let the other person point their camera at it.
  • Share opens your device's share sheet with your business card's link. Where the device or browser cannot open a share sheet, it copies the link instead.
  • Copy link copies the link.

Tap to share on Android

Open My card in the ONYX1 Android app while the card is live. Select Tap to share and keep the screen open. Hold the back of your phone to theirs. Their phone shows a notification that opens the card page. NFC must be on. If it is off, select Turn on NFC to open NFC settings.

Select Share contact to open Android's share sheet with your contact file. Choose Quick Share if it appears. Older phones may call it Nearby Share. Select Show QR instead to share the card by QR code.

Add it to your phone's wallet

Once your business card is live, My card offers Add to Apple Wallet on an iPhone, an iPad or Safari on a Mac, and Add to Google Wallet on an Android phone or in another browser on a computer. Select the button and confirm in your wallet. The pass shows your name, role, mobile and email (only the ones your company allows and you filled in), your company's logo and colours, and a QR code for the card's link. Apple Wallet shows Powered by ONYX1 under the QR code; Google Wallet shows it at the top of the pass.

The pass updates itself. When you change your details, turn the card on or off, or your company changes the card's design, logo, colours or name, ONYX1 sends the new version to the wallet straight away, and tries again every few minutes if Apple or Google does not take it. When the wallet app shows it is up to Apple or Google.

If the card is switched off, you turn it off, you are deactivated, or your company turns cards off, moves to a plan without business cards or is suspended, the pass shows This card is no longer in use and its QR code no longer works. The same happens in reverse when the card is live again.

Reset my link works differently. A pass made before a reset stops updating on an iPhone and its QR code stops working, so delete it from Wallet and add the new one from My card. On Android the old pass is marked inactive; delete it too.

If a button is missing, the card may not be live yet, or wallet passes may not be set up for ONYX1 on that kind of phone.

Adding a business card to a wallet sends some of the card's details to Apple or Google (Privacy Policy section 7B lists them), whose wallet apps store them under their own privacy terms.

Seen this month on My card counts how many times your business card page was opened. Only you and your owner or admins can see that number.

What the other person sees

They open your link on any phone. The card looks like a physical card; tap it to turn it over. Save contact adds you to their phone's contacts with your photo and your company logo when you have them. They can also call, text, email or visit the website, and open directions to your address.

A small Powered by ONYX1 line at the bottom links to ONYX1. The page does not ask the visitor for anything and uses no cookies, advertising or analytics services. Each card keeps a running total of its page views on ONYX1's own server.

Switch a card off

Owners and admins can switch any other person's card off from the People table in Settings → Business cards. Select Switch off. To turn off your own card, use the Card is live switch on My card. The card page stops working straight away, and the person cannot turn it back on themselves. Select Switch on to allow it again.

A card also stops working when:

  • the person turns Card is live off
  • the person is deactivated
  • you turn Cards on for the company off
  • your company moves to a plan without business cards
  • your company's account is suspended

The link then says This card is no longer available, and any wallet pass of the card shows This card is no longer in use.

If a link or QR code has gone somewhere it should not have, select Reset my link below your details (on a phone, open Edit my details first). Your old link, QR code and wallet pass stop working at once and you get a new link.

Privacy

Each person decides whether to publish their card and what they type into it, and can take it down at any time. Your company decides which personal details may show (Mobile, Email, Job title and Photo) and sets the company details on every card. The card page is public to anyone who has the link. Do not put anything on your business card that you do not want a stranger holding. The link is long and random (128 bits), so it is not practical to guess, and the page is hidden from search engines.

To limit repeated requests, ONYX1 also keeps a short-lived record for each visitor's device. It holds a scrambled form of the device's address, a time window and a count, and never the address itself. A weekly clean-up removes each record once it is more than a day old, so one can remain for up to about eight days. We do not store who opened a card.
